Project Title: From Exclusion to Inclusion: Supporting Students in Alternative Settings

Submission: Professional Certificate in Digital Learning and Instructional Design

This project is a detailed demonstration of instructional design skills developed as part of the Professional Certificate in E-Learning and Instructional Design through Digital Learning Institute. The course concept focuses on equipping educators with strategies to support students in alternative settings due to disciplinary actions, emphasizing inclusivity and improved outcomes for marginalized students. Although not slated for immediate implementation, this case study presents a comprehensive framework for a potential e-learning course, incorporating best practices and scalable design.

Scope:

This case study highlights the design of Module 1, which introduces foundational concepts of exclusionary discipline in Texas, including legislation, risk factors, and potential consequences. A central case study, involving two students and their varied outcomes based on the support they receive, is introduced in this module and revisited throughout the course to demonstrate the effects of different educator approaches.

Each module was designed with scalability and adaptability in mind:

Module 1: Covers exclusionary discipline broadly, making it applicable across districts.

Module 2: District-specific logistics, which can be modified to reflect local protocols, curriculum/educational programs and contact points.

Module 3: Focuses on best practices through an interactive classroom and an iPad simulation that includes adaptable tools for supporting students during alternative placement.

Module 4: Guides teachers in creating an individualized educational support plan through step-by-step screencasts, culminating in a hands-on assignment submission for professional development credit. This module also features a branching scenario that allows teachers to explore the potential outcomes of different support strategies, providing a practical space for decision-making practice.

The prototype of Module 1 was created to demonstrate a structured approach to gathering stakeholder feedback, supporting future scaling and customization. Implementation and evaluation plans outline strategies for real-world application and ongoing improvement if pursued for broader use.
